After reading a few threads of work allegedly done badly by well known Gunsmiths, perhaps a new section could be put a side for the discussion of such ? I'm sure we'd all like to know who might be loosing their grip. But ,as there are two sides to every story, it could get kinda messy. But I'd sure like to know about Gunsmiths that don't get it done as asked,or come up short of the customers instructions Anyone else? cheers Franc

I think that would be a very bad idea Franc. Someone could sign up for one post and trash somebody's hard earned reputation then disappear into the internet. You're only as good as your last job and with some, there could be far too many devious motives that could be going on there that we don't understand or ever know.

If I don't have anything good to say, I don't say anything at all.
Might be a better approach is look for positive customer comments that are specific, Even the best workmen are presented with job's that have a low percentage of success and customers with unrealistic expectations. Better to hear somebody had good results with the kind of work you want.
Way I look at it anyway

In part I echo Boats' "If I don't have anything good to say, I don't say anything at all."
I am really torn over this. Free speech (also responsible speech) is critical.
Further I like many others look for advice and experience on various gun issues to include both sellers and gunsmiths.
Years back there was a shop in Florida promising rebarrelling at great prices and it turned out not to be giving any kind of acceptable service. I am glad someone posted on them as it saved me from making a big mistake with a 20ga LC Smith 5E.
I do not like to speak unfairly of people or trash them personally. I work very hard to control my emotions in posting. Yet still if a service is not satisfactorily provided I believe any member with fairness should be able to post.
Recently a posting about a gunsmith shop was made that showed amongst some things horrible checkering. It concerned me in two ways. First I have had a couple of successful experiences at that shop and from both the current and former owner. Second I have a gun there now and checkering is part of the project on a butt transplant. While it gave me pause, I will wait and see how it works out and if good I will give fair credit.
The rule should be simple; be prepared to honestly and unemotionally support your points before you post and especially if going negative, pause a bit, organize your points and the support for them, then post with both good thought and supported by simple facts. Always endevour to be professional (gentlemanly).
A difference between humans and animals is the ability to control emotion and use reason. While we are all capable of it, we tend not to more often than not.

I always hate to see one of our few double-gun specialists get called out for less than adequate work or service. If it is done it should by all means be in the manner of the OP in the Kearcher thread. I don't think anyone could dispute the problems complained of in his case, and I consider it a service to the group that the matter was brought to our attention...Geo
