Greetings... I have an opportunity to purchase for $500 what looks to be a new, made in Italy, 'Empire' 16 ga. side-by-side shotgun. It's owned by a good friend of a very good friend of mine who claims that only one box was run through it.
The 2006 Standard Catalog of FIREARMS values this gun in excellent condition at $1,500 while the Japanese (Miroku) version 'Empire' in excellent condition is valued at $600.
What comments/opinions do you have about this gun functionally, and what should be its proper value? All comments are welcome, and very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance. JYuma

I think that's a very good price for an as new Beretta-made double. The roller-operated latch in the forend is awkward.

Hello Jack...this is JYuma Thank you for your comments. When you mentioned 'Beretta' as the manufacturer, I had to try to verify it through my own research. I found the Daly web page and in their 'frequently asked questions', it says that 'Empire' grade sxs's that were imported by K.B.I., Inc. were manufactured by Sabatti of Italy. This would have been around 1976.
Could you provide any further comments about Beretta's involvement with Charles Daly sxs's?
Best regards, JYuma

Yes I could. One of the dealers at Millbrook Vintagers (believe it was the "Fox restoration" fellow) had a Charles Daly 20 gauge w/ hang tag suggesting Beretta-made. It did have Italian proofmarks. Perhaps as don't I always, he doesn't know shite from apple butter either? Good catch!!

Jack..... I looked at a number of gun web pages and there were other references to Beretta being the manufacturer of the Daly sxs's. Could be that people just keep passing around the same bogus information, unknowingly. Also, I suppose folks were thinking that if Beretta made them, the resale value/opportunities would be greater.
I have to say, the quality of the workmanship is pretty nice. The stock quality is another thing.
I'm going to shoot a couple rounds of trap w/it tomorrow. If it shoots ok, I'll buy it. If I have fun w/it for a decade or so, maybe one day I'll get my money out of it.... Best regards, JYuma.
