I am considering the purchase of an Ithaca 4E single barrel trap gun. It's in excellent condition and fits me well. The only thing I don't really like about it is the fact that it has a Morgan adjustable recoil pad. I would rather have an Ithaca Sunburst pad, but if I were to replace the Morgan with an Ithaca pad, I would need to add nearly 3/4" of black spacers to retain the current LOP, which appeals to me even less. Any Ideas? Does anyone know if Ithaca ever installed Morgan pads as a factory option? How long have Morgan pads been around, and does the fact that an 80 year old trap gun has one on it negatively affect the value?

They were not standard just ugly aftermarket. My Dad put them on all his guns (he thought they looked good. i preferblack pads like Kickeez or Packmeyer, not original but I think they look better. I short stock does reduse value.

A 'period appropriate' pad that can restore the LOP without a spacer is the Pachmayr F990 White Line Field which is 1 1/2". Brownells Item # 690-371-XXX Unfortunately, the 1 1/2" T660 Triple Magnum Trap is no longer listed in the catalog.

Both of my Ithaca singles are "Special Order Ladies Models" with shorter than standard stocks. I think the rarity of this model adds quite a bit to the value! You could also be the proud owner of one of these rare guns. Of course, you can install the extra thick model of Kickeez pad that is very shootable.

How do you determine if the gun in question is a "special order ladie model" or simply a standard that has had the stock cut? Having the stock cut would seem (to me) to lessen the value as opposed to one that has the standard length of pull.

Trap shooters keep stock makers busy modifying their stocks. A factory "original" trap stock is a rare bird. bill

Steve, the "Special Order Ladies Model" is a variation that exists in all makes of the classic American shotgun. It is seldom mentioned in catalogs and is often omitted from factory letters of provenance. However, it is very common (although at the same time rare) in the minds of those who own, or are attempting to sell, such shotguns. Another rare model is the "Child's Model", although it is more common in the Model 42 Winchester than in double barrel shotguns. It's most prominent feature, as in the Ladies Model, is a shorter than normal buttstock. It is my recommendation to restrict your payment for such guns to fifteen to twenty percent above the price of the standard model in any make.
