Well, living in the"Western Desert", ;), I can assure you, that there were and still are plenty of waterfowl on the shore of the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the numerous lakes, especially in Mecklenburg Vorpommern (north-east).... And they did so in 1578, always with guns, as to be seen here: http://www.billerantik.de/products/Jagd-...anus-A3-40.htmlMy guess, the Triebel was a spoil of war and made it's way with a british soldier to Egypt, were it met some of the migrant birds coming from Germany in winter again  Cheers, Gunwolf

Thanks for the comments on this one guys. Interesting to hear you theories, which align pretty much with my thoughts.
It would be great to try and put a manufacture date on this with your help. I am guessing late 1800's, but maybe the bigger guns were still made with hammers into the early 1900's or maybe even beyond?
I have started to do try and renovate the woodwork on this now.
When it comes to the barrels, would they have been blacked or browned? I'm thinking they would look nice browned and i have a local guy that can do it for me (once he has extended his chemical tray to fit the long barrels).

Gunwolf-thanks. Sounds like a wonderful area. As to "Western Desert," I was thinking of the region where Montgomery and Rommel had their altercation.
GB- keep the pics coming. Looks like a nice piece of wood. Not sure about the original barrel color. I would think black but greater minds may chime in. Brown would look good and be in keeping with an aged gun regardless of the original color. You could brown them and boil later if desired.

gb - I only by now see, that you are located in the UK... think my guess is not so bad. Bräunieren would be the right way, I think. In Germany you can buy the right chemicals and I'm sure in GB as well! By the way, in Germany they are produced by Triebel... I finally found a Triebel in Altona. The 1880 Adressbook has a V. Triebel, Militär Büchsenmacher (Military Gunmaker)

I did a little bit research and find that
Triebel, V. was in Altona,
1875-1878, Gerberstrasse 8, 1875 as "Büchsenmacher", 1877 as "Militär-Büchsenmacher"
1878, Ungerstrasse 47
1879 -1901, Wilhelmstrasse 47
1904-1919, Geibelstrasse 28
1920, Triebel Valentin, as "Waffenmeister" and Triebel Anton (probably his son), Gefionstrasse 8
1925-1943, Triebel, Anton, as "Oberwaffenmeister", Lohmühlenstrasse 115
So both, father and son were Büchsenmacher or Waffenmeister (the same)

starting to build up the oil finish...   I have still got a few minor marks in the woodwork that sanding and bleach wouldn't remove, so I went ahead with the oiling anyway. After all, it's not a perfect gun and some battle scars won't spoil it. That extra info is really useful, so thanks again guys.
