OK, so I notice some gun sellers won't ship to California. I never bothered to find out why. My son, who lives in CA, lost his duck gun overboard while hunting yesterday and needs a replacement. I've told him to find a FFL dealer and I'll ship him one of my spares (a SKB 585). What kind of problems will this entail?

Not an expert but just sold a rifle to a California buyer. It involved some extra paperwork by the FFLs and the buyer. Find a FFL who is registered with the California DofJ. He will know the process which involves getting a shipping number from the CA DofJ website, etc. There is also a 10 day waiting period which your son will have to endure before he can pick up the shotgun from his FFL.

I would just ask the dealer you are used to using if he's shipped to CA. Some haven't and just won't. It says as much about them as it does about CA.
Many just don't consider it a big deal and want your business. Some make it a big deal, and don't, apparently, want you as a customer.
More a personality issue than a real problem, IMO. And I get most of my guns guns from out of state.
If I sound a little peevy about this, it's because I don't like out-of-state gun dealers helping our legislature deny us our rights. They DO have the right to refuse us as customers. But little reason, IMO.

I have sold into california one time and found it is really not a big deal. Just a little extra work.
The selling FFL dealer has to register as an FFL dealer with the California DOJ. Easily done on-line. Then, when a gun is wanting to be shipped by that dealer to a receiving dealer in California. The shipping dealer requests for approval to ship from the California DOJ. Again, can be done on-line or by mail. You simply state what dealer in California the gun is being shipped to, then the DOJ confirms approval to ship with a letter and a confirmation number. That letter has to acompany the shipment to the receiving dealer. As i recall, when i did it, i received confirmation back via on-line within a few hours. Very fast turnaround.
It is basically a redundant process that allows California to confirm that you are in fact shipping to a licensed dealer.
Now... I do not know what the process might be if you are an individual shipping to California.

I sold a bolt rifle to a a guy in Kali a few years ago. As an out of state, individual seller, the process was the same as any other state. I sent a copy of my DL and a BOS with the rifle. They collect tax on the transactions in Kali. That was the reason for the BOS. Not sure if it has changed in the last 5 or so years though.
Hope this helps, Bill

Most of the questions can be answered here; http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/cflcfaqs.phpnote FAQ 2 and 4, C&R and antique firearms with the exception of C&R handguns are handled like anywhere else.
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

All the sellers on GB who refuse to sell into Calofornia are either doing so out of protest, or ignorance. They are hurting no one but themselves.

you may not need to do an ffl transfer if you are giving your son one of your shotguns. suggest your son check with his local police for a reading.
in any event ship it priority mail insured for best result.
keep it simple and keep it safe...

Interesting point. What if he drove to California with the longarm and gave it to his son face to face?
