Further to my previous post ( http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=421965#Post421965), I have now acquired the said JP Sauer & Sohn 16 ga. over .30-30. The stock does in fact include a perpendicular piece of walnut, followed by a black spacer and a rubber pad, resulting in a LOP of 14 7/8". The previous owner could offer me no definitive insight as to the reason for this alternation, but with me being tall and of long arms, the gun fits me well. The barrels measure 25 5/8" in length and it has a set trigger. I believe the gun to be a Model 54, but I submit the following photos in the hope that those here can educate me on this gun. Cheers! I'd hazard a guess it experienced proof in 1959.

Nice, and in a single shot that 30/30 can be handloaded with a much more efficient spitzer bullet.

Kind Regards,
Raimey rse You may be right. The "59" beneath the nitro proof is the only thing I see that resembles a date code. It would make sense since I've read that the Model 54 (if I'm correct on the model) was manufactured from 1954-1988. At this time I don't know that the "B W" means, found above the preliminary proof:

BW more than likely denotes the mechanic who was the tubeset knitter?

Nice one Ninepointer. You should bring it on the 29th if you are coming to the shoot.

A handsome, and I suspect handy, combo. Larry's right: a single shot .30-30 with a longish barrel can be handloaded right out of the "brush rifle" category into much better ballistics, wound effects, and accuracy than yo grandaddy's thutty-thutty!
I don't know much German and have learned not to guess at gun markings (Don't ask how!). Can anybody translate "Spezial Laufstall" and "Rochumer Verein" for me?

"Spezial Laufstahl" means "special barrel steel".
"Rochumer Verein" means "Rochumer Guild or Association".

with apologies to Xausa Bochumer Verein was one of several Steelmakers in the 'Ruhrgebiet' - taken over shortly after WW2 by Krupp I found a reference (in german) that Krupp could not put their own name on gun-parts after the war - for that reason they marked barrels with 'Bochumer Verein' http://www.deutsches-jagd-lexikon.de/index.php/Krupp-LaufstahlB W most likely stands for Baden Würtemberg', the state in which the gun was proofed in 59 Günter
