I'm shooting a old Husqvarna hammer shotgun for ducks.
If I fire the gun I get a layer of rust about 2-3 inches long in front of the chamber mainly in the right barrel,it appears overnight and does not extend down the barrel any farther it is quite heavy making those couple of inches appear black. Load is RIO or Cheddite primer, BP HCD-21 wad, ITX shot completely contained in the shotcup and PB powder.
It does this with as little as one round, youd think I was shooting Black Powder as heavy as the rust is.
Any thoughts. I'll try and post a picture.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Has the barrel been polished in that area to remove previous pits or roughness? Sounds like the surface area in that one spot is different than the rest of both barrels. Perhaps a finer finish would eliminate the problem.

My SxS's seem to do the same thing in the chambers and breech face. In the Skeet Shooting Review there's a article about a couple of products made by QMAXX that would seem to solve our problems.

I don't believe the barrel has been polished as the bores are close to another one I have of the same model. What you are seeing is the chamber, forcing cone and thn the rust in the bore for about 3" and stops there with the rest of the bore shiny.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Wonder about taking a page from the muzzleloaders and clean and season that section with bore butter or some such.

Can there be black powder residue in the steel? I do have to keep and eye on this gun as sometime after it sits for awhile after cleaning and oiling it the rust will return and after a second cleaning it seems to be OK until the next time I take it shooting.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Polish it mirror bright. Both barrels.
Then clean and oil post shoot as normal. You have differential corrosion due to different microfinishing between the barrels. One side provides greater tooth to the oxygen in the atmosphere than the other side, so it rusts faster. Or at least as your eyes see the rust flowering it does.
I keep oil wipes in the door of my truck. No gun gets cased without a wipe down. Chambers as well. They dispense like baby wipes. Read that idea someplace else. It has been a good one.
Out there doing it best I can.

I think the chambers on my Broadway Trap Superposed rust on the way home from the club. I've polished the heck out of them...no difference.
