I recently got a neat little 28 damascus hammergun and in the process of cleaning it up a bit. My first dealing w/ sidelocks. I have pulled the locks and found a good bit of rust. Cleaned them up fairly well w/ brass brush, about all I will do for now on them. Now what should be done to lube them and protect metal that will be in contact with wood. Searches here and web did not yield much and certainly not specifics. I'll add the locks function very well and wear is very pleasingly absent.

Additionally, can the lever be removed (slotted screw/bolt) by itself with out disassembly of any other parts and what lubing should it recieve. It is jabc but a neat little gun I would like to preserve. Thanks.

I use a soft bristle brush to lube the internals on all my guns. An old fashioned shaving brush is about ideal, but the ones I found in a tool store are smaller in diameter and work well. One drop of oil on the end of the bristles is sufficient to oil all of the internals of one gun.

An old fashioned English gunsmith showed me what he does: He puts Vaseline on the internals of the locks and then with a propane torch, melts the Vaseline. That's all there is to it.
