I found a pair of back-action sidelocks with nice engraving, and it appears to be quality insides. engraved is H Holland.

Holland & Holland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Holland & Holland are prestigious British gun-makers of hand-made sporting rifles and shotguns, holding two Royal Warrants.

[edit] History
The firm was founded by Harris Holland (1806-96) in the year 1835. He may have had a wholesale tobacco business in London. Whatever his source of income, he was often seen at live pigeon shoots around London, as well as shooting grouse on a moor he leased in Yorkshire.

Recognised as an accomplished shot, he was convinced to start his own gun-making business. At first the guns bore the inscription "H. Holland". It is not known when Harris started his own manufacturing operation, but it is believed to have been in the 1850s.

Having no children of his own, he took on his nephew Henry, also a Holland, as an apprentice in 1861. In 1867, Henry became a partner, and in 1876 the name of the firm was changed to Holland and Holland, although his uncle still kept a tight rein on the running of the company.

It's likely not a knock-off gun. You probably have a very early Holland gun.

Harris Holland did not make his own guns. He bought them from other makers and had his name put on the gun. The firm did not become Holland & Holland until after his nephew Harry joined the company.

Semi-Related; a gun dealer once tried to sell me a Holland Holland box lock as an economy grade Holland & Holland. Note the former had no "&". I quickly noted it had nothing but Belgian proofs. Have no idea what it really was.

Mike, must ask re: the H. Holland pictured, what are the nacelles at side of fences if indeed right side of gun also has this protruberance. Double underlug shows; are these things at side yet another sort of locking mechanism?

Rabbit they are indeed two more locking lugs. They pull back into the shroud when the top lever is pushed to open the gun.

Mike H. and others. That H. Holland gun is built on a Scott patent and probably built by Scott, too. I have seen that five [I think] bolt lock up on other H Hollands and a couple of other lesser known names.
