I had posted this on the General Discussion board and thought I'd put it on here in case any of the knowledgeable German gun enthusiasts missed it. This Jones Underlever has very few markings anywhere, nothing on the watertable and just these few markings on the barrels. The S-S with crossed swords below was identified as a Sauer & Sohns mark.

Any opinions, comments, etc. on the age and reason for so few proof marks on this gun would be appreciated. She's a 16 gauge and from what little I've shot her seems like a nice gun.

I'd like to see an image of the hammers, which remind me of the early Lancaster type. I'm curious if it was a British parts kit that Emil Eckoldt & Sauer completed. Nothing more than a wild guess, but Emil Eckoldt was a subcontractor to H.A. Lindner and performed some tube tasks so I'd say the large Es are his. He hung out his shingle in 1876, being 3 years after Sauer began to concentrate on sporting weapons. I'd date it to the early 1880s & possibly a little bit earlier. If you pull the locks, there may be some marks there.

Kind Regards,

Here you go Raimey. Hope this pic of her hammers helps.

I'm afraid that I'm not comfortable taking her locks off but have emailed Mark Larson who restored her to see if he remembers any markings on the locks. It's surprising that her watertable is void of any marks except for 111 which is also found on the barrels and forearm. She also doesn't have the typical German engraving that I've seen on other German guns. Maybe just a classic "guild" gun with parts from various countries.

Best Regards
Rick
