Need Large Period Pad (1870-80) for 8 Ga _Pull 12 1/2 w/out pad @ 6 in by 2 1/4 in Any ideas on if and can such a pad can be found? Thanks Bill McPhail

The earliest pads that I know of came on the scene about 1880. That would be the Silvers pad. They are made in a similar looking design today. Kynoch and Galazan would have new ones.

And the silvers pads are pretty large before being ground. It should work for you.

Griffin and Howe Silver Repro, 6 1/8" X 2" at the widest point. I don't know if an original Silver is quite that big. Look on the Griffin and Howe website. I've used this pad on big guns for thirty years. $35

Bill if you are measuring 6" at the heel of the stock wood, the pad will have to be at least another 1/4" or so longer once the final shaping is complete.

Obviously on an 8 gauge weight is not an issue, but I am 6'4" and have used the huge Galazan Silvers pad several times and they weigh a ton. I think it is over a pound just for the pad. CHAZ
