Tom,
Nice Krag, any clues as to the maker? It caught my attention, but left the realm of my budget when it passed 2x the low estimate. I figure there is more there than meets the eye of us internet bidders. I "attended" this auction with one hand tied behind my back. I take delivery of a new RAM 2500 diesel Friday so I wasn't wanting to get too carried away. I was hoping for a bargain or two and had my eye on the
Stoeger . I thought it would go well with the 1903 "Stoeger" of MP's that I got. Alas I had to leave the room and by the time I got back it was gone. So much for Day 1.
Day 2 was better, although my performance on the keyboard wasn't. I let what might have been a bargain slip through because I was reading the description again.
Bargain Krag As Michael once told me when discussing a different Krag, "you can't go wrong with a Krag for that price".
I thought I had a bargain with
Remington Lee . My bad luck was what I thought was the online ticker going from twice to sold was it going back to first and me gloating too soon and failing to bid again.
As it was, I feel I have an interesting piece on the way in the form of
the Ditchburn Springfield . I am a sucker for odd cartridges and the 7x61 would seem to qualify IMHO. Robert Ditchburn (1921-2011) was one of the three people credited for the development of the cartridge and Philip Sharpe refered to him as "his personal gunsmith". He was a tool and die maker and I am anxious to see if this is as well built as I hope. The prototype 1903 he built for Sharpe sold for $4800 at Bohnam's (sp) a couple of years ago. Icing on the cake was I went to eBay and snagged a set of dies for $25 right after I won it. Slap a better scope on it and get some brass and it will be ready fot this year's hunting season.
I was surprised that so many of the Krags exceeded the estimate, unlike the 1903s of MP;s that seemed as a whole to be under estimated values.
