I have Vintage British Shotguns by Terry Weiland, Nigel Brown's British Gunmakers Vol 1 & 2 and Best Guns by Michael McIntosh is on my Amazon wish list.

Are there any other good books out there covering British shotguns? I'm not interested in percussion or pinfires.

I have become addicted to English hammered shotguns to the detriment of my wallet.

If you want 'technical' as in the details of the patents etc, the British Shotgun Volumes 1, 2 and 3 by Ian Crudgington and David Baker is unbeatable. Still widely available.

There are various beautifully illustrated books (by Donald Dallas in particular, but also others) that are 'maker specific'.

There are a variety of older 'classics' like anything by Gough Thomas, Burrard, J.H Walsh, Greener etc. Many are available as reprints.

I would also recommend the Dig Hadoke and Nigel Brown books mentioned in previous posts

I suggest strongly the old "The Modern Shotgun" by Gerald Burrard.

I've seen the maker specific ones and I may pick them up at some point for the photos and history, but since I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a Purdey, Boss or Holland & Holland, right now I am conetrating on learning more about some of the other makers whose guns I might be able to afford.

And thanks for all of the answers and recommendations!

For general books that give a lot of information; apart from Diggory's books mention above, I would highly recommend The British Sporting Gun & Rifle by Donald Dallas and also Heyday of the Shotgun by David Baker. And of course The Gun & Its Development by W.W.Greener; may be an old one but still one of the best. Lagopus.....

Modern Sporting Guns by Christopher Austyn & Lock Stock & Barrel
by Cyril Adams & Robert Braden are a couple of more broadly based books I would recommend.

The maker specific books by both Don Masters & Donald Dallas are excellent. I especially enjoyed "The House of Churchill" by Don Masters. Lots of insight into English gun making despite being focused on his experiences @ Churchill's.
