I have a friend who's considering the purchase of a restored American sxs. Barrels have been shortened from 30" to 28". Some choke remains. I told him that I would worry that the barrel surgery may have changed point of impact. Anyone with experience with shortened barrels? Comments?

I owned one that had been bobbed long ago and it shot to point of aim.

The last 2, 3, or 4" of barrels aren't bent in to make them shoot the same point of impact. If he likes it and takes the shorting in to consideration when buying it everything should be fine. Paul

I have a Gr. 3 Ithaca Flues that Walt indicated started life as 30" barrels are now 26" The same with the LC field grade I restocked, the remaining choke is around .005 and .015, if I remember correctly Jim Stubbendeik said while it started as a 28" gun it is now about 26 1/2" and it shoots as well as I can. When in doubt shoot for point of impact. Most bobbed guns I have shot did shoot without any apparent change in impact. I figured the larger pattern compensated for any if any changes. A six to twelve inch wider spread covers a lot of minor changes.

Without knowing the POI before the surgery, how would you know if it changed?
I'd be most interested in the measurements of "some choke" remaining.

I have shot a Parker with -2 inches of barrel for years. Works fine for shots up to 30 yards. I do believe it does not shoot as well as when it had the extra 2 inches.

I'd be most interested in the measurements of "some choke" remaining. Any shot gun with a taper choke more than 2 inches long will have some choke remaining if going from 30 to 28. How does that sound fella?

Mike I don't care as much as what was the poi as how the point of impact is now with the shorter barrel. If you owned it before the cutting and after, you could have tested it to see if there is a major difference. As is all you can do is see if it is ok now.
I worry more about convergence than poi up or down. If both barrels shoot to the same poi you can adjust the stock if need be in most cases.
