I have chosen a piece of wood in my price range that I found to be gorgeous for an aya 28 gauge boxlock I am having built. Someone just told me that they would have rejected the block due to a knot in the wood.

How does a knot effect integrity of the stock? Is it enough of an issue to make it worth giving up a block that has sentimental value?

John: Where is the knot in the blank? If it will match up in the head or wrist of the stock, that won't be good. If it's in the butt area I don't think it's too big of a deal. Sometimes knots are pretty and beautify. A 28 is low recoil too so not such a major consideration in my opinion.

As a longtime woodworker I can tell you there's different types of knots. If it's the type that could shrink and come loose it should be avoided at all costs. However I doubt that any credible wood supplier would offer a blank of this type. Post some pictures if that's possible.

Knots in this blank don't look like any concern at all. If they show any open space, super glue will fill every void.

The knot is not the problem....the way the grain runs at the head and through the grip area could cause you problems....

It would be better if it was straighter grained in the head and grip area. But, it's probably ok for a 28b boxlock. It wouldn't be strong enough for a sidelock especially if 12 bore.

Buzz, what are your thoughts on the knot?

the knot might check or shed whatever finish you put on it but with an oil finish it can be touched up ..there might also be some voids or bark in the knot area when the blank is being trimmed down...these can more than likely be filled with some tinted Accra glass...sometimes the knot will even loosen and fall out..no problem if you like that assault style hole in the stock look...
