During your visit make a toast to Carrie Nation and see the Carrie Nation House, bought by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in the 1950s and declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1976.

What ever happened to Bill's gatling gun?

Oh, and here's a toast to the old battleaxe you mention.

"It speaks well to our national schizophrenia that the designation US National Historic Landmark is bestowed on the home of a person who was, in the final analysis, simply a terrorist."

My Maker's Mark was made at one of several distilleries in KY also so designated.
What a country.

Cheers!

Kansans are an interesting people, who were willing to fight for their beliefs. The War Between the States started in Kansas long before April 12, 1861.

Beecher Bible and Rifle Church in Wabaunsee. Established in June 1857 by Free State sympathizers. The "Connecticut-Kansas Colony" arrived with Sharps rifles and 25 Bibles provided by the congregation of Henry Ward Beecher.

As a % of the population, no State contributed more able bodied men to the Union cause than Kansas; almost 50%.

The Lincoln Co. Courthouse

BUT concealed carry did not pass until 2006.

William Allen White, 'The Sage of Emporia'
"Kansans are marked by Puritanism. The first Kansans were crusaders, intellectual and social pioneers, conventers of various sorts...Slavery being abolished your Kansans had to begin abolishing something else. Abolitionism was more than a conviction; it was a temperamental habit."
"Abolition, Prohibition, Populism, and Bull Moose, the Blue Sky law...these things come popping out in Kansas like bats out of hell. Sooner or later other states take up these things, and then Kansas goes on breeding other troubles."

These tend to run off the faint hearted

Drew, thank you for the pictures of home.

In years past I have hunted within four sections of Beecher Bible and Rifle Church.

Drew,

Enjoyed your comments (and others)about Kansas. I toured the Medicine Lodge Hotel gun room several years ago when I was on my way to a Legislators Sportsman caucus pheasant shoot in Garden City. Some neat Bill Ruger artifacts and guns.
Also we live about 15 miles from the old Beecher Bible church and it was in my legislative district until redistricting in 2012.
The comment about concealed carry not being passed until 2006 is right on, but we have made up for that in the recent years. We have passed a number of pro-2nd amendment bills since then and now have some of best 2nd amendment laws in the U.S.
You pictured those pesky tornados, but the yearly pasture burns in our pastures are a sight to behold at night and the skies will glow red in the horizons during April.
