Once you shoot a truly fitted gun its hard to go back to a factory configuration unless you are darn close to that configuration. I used to think I could fit most any gun unless it was extreme/weird measurements. I've since found out that I shoot much better when the gun fits properly and I can just throw it up and hit most of what I shoot at. Snap shooting IMO is just about impossible with a gun that doesn't fit.

One of my LC's does have a cracked stock, it was repaired pinned and glued. I have two LC stocks that are not on guns one is a fitted blank the other is a Fajen replacement(with beautiful wood). If these could be used in the fitting process that would be great. I have had other LC Smith's and the stock cracking has always been an issue. I wonder if the stock cracking issue should take them out of the running for fitting. Any thoughts?

That sums up my thoughts well.

Ditto what tut says. I'm having a Fox restocked that is fitted to my dimensions. My time spent at the shooting board with hte smith was an eye opener. I thought I could just shoot almost anything, but as a lefty getting to the point where started to adjust the cast on was a revelation. Smoking the center of the target with regularity snap shooting is making it worth the cost.

Drive over the Mackinac bridge and see Brian Bilinski in Traverse city.
He'll spend 4 hours with you, try gun , patterning plate, and get your dimensions precise. He also works with a gunsmith to do the job.
Had a Arietta and Perazzi bent for my left eye. He gives excellent service and Is detail oriented.

I had a gun fitting by Bryan a few yrs ago. Pretty close. It's impossible for a gun fitter to attain perfection. They can get you in the ball park, the tweaking is up to you. Also, it's important to know how to mount a shotgun the same each time every time before you go. The gun fitter has to have something to work with.

When I had my guns fitted one of the first things the fitter did was ask to see my mount. After complimenting me on my consistency, he then showed me what he called the "perfect mount."

Any fitting is a compromise of the several dimensions--but you will shoot more consistently if a gun fits you.

I have had to tweak over years for weight and eye changes too.

Heck of a nice guy and a double gun afficianado. If you ever get over to the Twin Cities I would be more than happy to help. I have done it every way possible - professional fitting, custom made stocks, making my own pattern stock and even making my own stocks. I built my own try-gun that fits on a Beretta o/u. A lot depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you do a bunch yourself it could be less than $100 depending on what you need to change. You could also spend $500 on a fitting and $5000 on a custom stock. If you like shotgunning a custom stock is the ultimate pleasure.
Regards,
Jeff
