Satin or Gloss for stocks; based on your experiences.
Will the gloss be best for overall use, cut the shine with 0000 woll if too shiney? or stick to the satin?

what is best to cut it with for wet sanding it in?

The satin seems to hide the detailing in the wood after a lot of coats. I use the gloss and then wool it to cut the shine. I have also used gloss for the base coats and then used satin for the top coats for less shine and more detail. Your choice.

Ditto dubble's comments. I much prefer to control the gloss level myself with the final rubout.

For wet sanding, I use VM&P naphtha as the thinner because it evaporates a little faster than regular mineral spirits and the odor is not as objectionable to me.

Many semigloss or satin finish clear coatings have solids in it to break up the shine. If applied with many coats, the solids will hide the detail of the grain. If you can, stick with a gloss finish and rub it out with rottenstone or even steel wool to cut the shine. Try a small area first.

As builder says, solids in semi and flat paints/coatings. These solids are usually talc powder. I've flattened paints and clear coatings with baby powder. 'smelled like a baby (clean one) when sprayed.

My experiance with this product is it is not very robust. I refinished a friends tournament gun a couple years ago and the finish just wore off. I put on over 10 coats of finish and was very happy with the look. However, it didnt last very long.

I have no experience with the Minwax Wipe-on Poly, but I refinished my 682 sporting gun with a semigloss spray of Pro Custom Oil and it's held up well. Although the grip area is wearing to a shiney finish from handling.
