Hoot4570, The 108/49 is the bore diameter and is often seen on various 9.3 rifles. This bore dia.most often has a groove diameter of .362-.364".There are several options for bullets, most appropriate for normal shooting being cast bullets.Cases are often made fron shortened 9.3x72R, but I prefer original length(2.125-2.130") 38-55 cases, even though a little short,to save the longer cases.Rifles like this are a "Hoot" to load for and shoot, and I encourage you to do so.It would be good to post photos. Mike

Live, from the kitchen table studio... The other mark lies on the bottom of the barrel, just in front of the barrel lug. I stared at it, first one way and then the other. I could be convinced that it is Hercules with his right hand on his hip and left hand raised with a club. No way I can get a picture of that to come out. The rifling is exactly as shown in the picture of the barrel end. Thank you all for the input provided to date.

You might be able to use that glass in the images to bring the mark into focus then capture an image of that. Are there numbers on the flip up sight?
Kind Regards,

Hokay....one hand to tilt the rifle just right, one hand to hold the glass, one hand to run the camera...results were dismal. I did a bit of surfing and found the image below. I am convinced it's what I am seeing. Sorry for the tiny pic...image source => http://germanhuntingguns.com/Sections/Page.asp?SSID=580&NRID=16About 2/3's the way down the page. The sight is unmarked on all visible surfaces. I will look at pulling it off and report back if it is marked underneath. Thanks for your continued indulgence, Hoot

Hoot4570,
Your rifling pattern is referred to as "Henry" rifling patented in 1860 by Alexander Henry, Edinburgh Scotland.
What is the length of your barrel? Looks to be quite long.
Regards,
Mark

Back again. Sorry to be so herky-jerky, we're going through a lay-off at work (mine) and I am a bit preoccupied. The barrel is 26-7/8" plus a bit, from muzzle to breech. I expect it measures about the same going the other way as well. The sight has "WS" stamped on the underside and "PAT.JAN.29.78.MAY.5.84" in very tiny letters around the stem. Not 100% sure about the characters after 'MAY'. There is one after-market, tapped hole in the tang and one wood screw into the wrist holding it in place. Still haven't got that particular "round tuit" to do the chamber cast or slug the bore yet but I don't expect too many surprises. Edit to add: Thanks for all the information so far. Regards.

Hello Mark!
I've got a question about your picture. There is the Sauer & Sohn stamp on the barrel's end. Some days ago I bought an old double gun in .360 - 9,3x57 R, produced around 1880 at Sauer & Son and delivered by KGL. BAYER. HOFGEWEHRFABRIK v. C. STIEGELE JR. MÜNCHEN. This type of double gun is shown on page 8 of the J.P. Sauer & Sohn Preis-Verzeichniss of 1882. Is yours one of this type, too?

Martin, I don't have a copy of the J.P. Sauer & Sohn Preis-Verzeichniss of 1882 to be able to say but below is another picture of the gun associated with the muzzle picture showing the Henry rifling. The gun is a 11.15X60R (.43 Mauser) Sauer Model 32 ... Regards, Mark
