Anyone notice this auction

Sporter

Once a nice rifle. At least the metal looks like it could be salvaged. Bolt handle has not been altered and receiver not drill and tapped for scope.

I suspect this rifle was stolen and cutoff by the thief, before being returned to the owner.

Seems to me that the seller is courting a lot of trouble for a very small reward. If that were mine, I would have advertised it as a barreled action, with a broken stock thrown in.

Yes, I noticed it and wondered if it had been done by someone
famous, I bet it was a heck of a rifle before it saw hard times.
It looks like it has a horn forend tip and probably a horn grip cap. The remnants of the pistol grip seem to show a lot of figure,
maybe that is why the stock broke. I was hoping that it would slide
under the radar and I could pick it up cheaply, but that didn't happen.

There was some design to the checkering at the grip - notice the peak straight behind the trigger in the second pic. Seems familiar but I can't place it.

The bright phillips would seem to date (at least some of) the repair.

An interesting early Springfield. Did you get it John?

No I did not, but I think someone got a deal if they do not mind it being a low number. It would be a great action for a restoration project. Although I suspect the rear sight would not be drilled correctly for a Lyman 48.

Could the stock be restored?

John & Bryndon,
I got the parts. The stock had been cut for a Lyman 48 and I wonder if there is a mess under the Redfield sight. But Fred said he once replaced one of these old Redfields with a 48 and the holes worked. I know that the later Redfields won't line up right using 48 holes.

Not sure what you mean. If you are referring to the sawed off stock, the rifle is legal as both barrel length and overall length disqualify it as a sawed off rifle.

If I remember correctly it was at one time against the law for an individual to make a handgun from a rifle. I remember reading many years ago about the late Al Goerg making a single shot handgun from a Remington rolling block rifle and finding out he had done something illegal. I don't know if this is still the case or not, or even if it is if it is enforced. I do know I wouldn't chance running afoul with the BATF when it would have been a simple thing to sell a barreled action and a cut off stock separately.
