I have been presented with the opportunity to purchase a Mauser, made in Belgium. Marked Kurt Jaeger, Mainz. Hand inlaid, engraved, checkered. .270 #363976 with Zeiss scope. I have contacted Mr. Apel and he replied back to me with the following:
The rifle is one of the most ornate rifles made by Kurt Jaeger in Mainz. The engraving was done by either Emil Willig or Claus Willig his son. I am sending a few photos to Claus Willig for identification. He may also know who made or at least carved the stock and did the inlays. The mount came from Paul Jaeger, Kurt Jaeger's brother. The rifle catered to the taste of the American service men who were stationed in Germany and wanted something very German. Stock carving and inlays were not the taste of many German gun owners. I will get back to you after I hear from Claus Willig.

How do you put a valuation on such a rifle?

If there was ever a gun you could call "German-American," I'd say that's it. Strange and wondrous hybrid styling! Excellent pix.

I always hate seeing these types of rifles, you know, a rifle that has such a high level of craftsmanship and artwork, but the style is so...."off" (trying to be polite) that the whole is a turn-off. The wood work and carving are exceptional and I can see what the stocker was trying (and did) accomplish with the layout, but... Likewise, the Germanic engraving- top notch, but the rest of the metal work is rather underwhelming, the front sight and ramp, the bolt knob. Love to have access to the artisans just to be able to guide them in a different direction for a build.

This rifle may not fit todays style(which is a copy of even earlier style), but it was built at an earlier time, when style was different. To critcise someone else's taste loses sight of the likelyhood that what is now in style would have been considered "old timey" in another time. For a young lad(this term is relative)to think he can "guide" a Kurt Jaeger seems just a little bit elitest.
