I recently stumbled upon a Sedgley that has been abused -- barrel cut to 24 and Weaver scope mounts drilled, stocked in a monte carlo mess and the original safety switched to the Buehler style. That said, it's got the one-line address, all the right marks, serial in the right place, the bore is pristine and it appears to have the speed lock, as the cocking bolt remains proud 1/4 inch when fully forward.
Soooo, I am in the hunt for a Sedgley-pattern stock blank, a Lyman 48 long slide sight and a ramp front sight that at least sort of looks like an original. There's a stock outfit in Weiser, Idaho, that may have the Great American Gunstock Sedgley pattern (e-mail in to them) and NECG makes a passable banded ramped front sight, but there's nothing quite like a Lyman 48 LS. See one on Ebay for a lot of cash and not in the best shape. Anyone here have one they would consider parting with?

Nope, fine American classic like that needs something truly special. I recommend tiny Aimpoint dot sight w/o night vision device capability. I think it's called H-1. cool

Lyman 48 sights that are right for that era usually sell in the 150.00 range on Ebay if decent. True long slides (2 1/2") a lot more

Jagermeister: Yeah, that'd go nicely with a laminated thumbhole stock, too.
:-)
James, I have a Lyman 48S graduated to 60, and will probably just be happy with that. The long slides are pretty spendy all right.

Because the answer to this question may have bearing on my next rifle, how far with the not-long slide reach for range? More specifically, will it routinely reach a 500 m ram with most loads (or just a bit further in the case of the St. Louis range where I hope to debut one day)?

Well, actually, I'm thinking of campaigning a Krag if I can find one I like. but I might go for an 03 instead. If I feel the need, it would be easier to scope too. But I would like to try lead bullets and iron sights to start with.

I know most of those guys have fully tricked out race guns for that game but I wonder if that is really required. Anyway, it is what I am thinking about of late.

Judging by the elevation of the rear sight om my Krag for 600yds I suspect a non-long slide Lyman 48 should be adequate. Probably short for 1000 though.

Thanks Jerry, that sounds promising.

Why don't you just buy my all original Sedgley? The Lyman 48 and the ramp come with it, as well as the stock.

I might consider taking yours, for what you have in it, as partial payment.
