A generous and admirable act, Mr Snyder. Sharing this history with those who can truly appreciate this collection is a wonderful thing. Kudos!

Here's a dumb question; what are "pulls"?

A smoke pull is a negative image of engraving. You smoke the action with an oil lamp and press paper or scotch tape onto the action, the carbon is transferred from the action to the paper or tape. The low points that have been cut away do not show up giving you a negative image.

two of them appear to be smoke pulls the rest are ink pulls, ink is rubbed all over the engraving, then wiped off to leave ink in the engraving, paper or card stock is fixed on the engraving, burnished on the engraving to get a positive.hope this is clear mc

I had the wonderful opportunity to review Bill's Ithaca engraving effects. Among the treasures was a small container of China Wax. My guess is that he filled the engraving with ink or lamp black and then coated a paper with the wax to lift the pattern. Hopefully some one more familiar with this activity can shed some light on the process he used. The 'effects' were from his later years of his long career.

One of the methods of using wax to make a transfer or pull is to mix carbon black with the wax then rub it into the cuts, blade the excess from the top then use clear tape to lift the blackened wax from the engraved lines.

C,Roger Bleile.isn't that a pattern transfer?i use a similar system when i do revolver cylinder's. china wax used to coat the item to be engraved and draw your pattern.wax wouldn't help with lifting the pattern it might help with ink not sticking to the non image areas.mc
