Picked up this nice pair unfortunately sometime in the last century a previous owner removed a portion of both stocks and inserted india rubber pads which have since hardened. Looking for thoughts on what to do with them.

A good stock man, such as The Stock Doc, can fit new wood in that comes close to matching and refinish them. Would hardly be noticeable. Nice guns incidentally.

A ray of hope ...... those things look to me like stick-on pads not inserts. Why would someone chop great lumps out of the stock, build them back up to the original level and then add about an eighth of an inch of crappy rubber? A warm iron applied to one corner and a good tug says the timber underneath is the original.

The stocks look to have been lengthened with a neat wood extension, so again who would do work like that and then butcher the comb? I think you are going to be pleased to find the real deal (!) under there. They will need refinishing, but thats all, nor transplant surgery.

Very nice guns however, no matter what.

Eug

If these are the guns in Canada, I believe the owner said they have been inlet into the wood. There was a discussion about these guns last year on a Canadian forum and one fellow posted a factory advertisement which showed these pads as a factory option.

Zipperhead, if these are located in Canada, as Guns and I think, you should know I have just been having some discussions with a broker about sending guns to US for repair. So far I have not figured out a legal method to send the gun (receiver) or barrel. Wood only, however, is a different story. PM if you want more info.

Thanks gents, the combs definitely have pieces cut out of them. The stocks however have not been lengthened. I have sent a couple of my Colt SAA's to phoenix for work with no issues out or back. Customs was not concerned and I just marked on the packages for repair.

I love to see that choke information provided on performance basis, and not as a constriction measurement.

I had to look twice at the pics of the stocks, I've just sent a William Powell to be re-stocked that had near identical rubber pads/blocks as those.
'Luckily' the one I had was cracked across the wrist and was missing a horn below a lockplate so needed to be replaced anyway.
What was the logic in fitting them ? Was it for grip or was the rubber soft when it was new, so could act as a cushion ?

Thanks for all the advice. I finally found the 20 Gauge Webley I was looking for when I bought these so I have decided to sell them.
