Hello All, This is my first post on this board. I discovered the wealth of knowledge on here yesterday while searching for info on a shotgun my Grandpa has. His father brought it home from World War II. We know that it is an Anciens Establissment double barrel shotgun. Boxlock. It has Bayard barrels, as both are stamped with the knight, and it has "pours poudres vives" written on the barrel which indicates it is possibly from the French market? My grandpa is interested in finding the manufacture date. However, I cannot find the date code. I feel for certain I am looking at it but just don't know it. I have pictures and will share them if someone could kindly explain how I get them from photobucket onto here  Thanks!

Smades87, your gun was made by Anciens Establissments Pieper and "Bayard" is a brand name they used. They are not "Bayard" barrels.
Henri Pieper was the founder of the original firm, Henri Pieper, in Belgium and upon his death, in 1898 If I recall correctly, there was a period of tumoil ending when Anciens Establissments Pieper was formed in 1905.
Henri Pieper was also one of the founding partners in FN, currently one of the world's largest manufactures of sporting arms and handguns.
As previously noted, pictures here are very important for accurately identifying any gun. We'll look forward to seeing some.

"Anciens Etablissements" should be followed by a company name such as "Bayard" or whatever.
It means something like "old company ....."
"pour poudre vive" is Belgian for "for nitro powder".
This is a Belgian gun for sure...
could be anywhere from late 1890s to 1930s.
Pictures would sure help.

It will not have a date code, because it was made made before they came into use. Post pictures of the gun and the proof marks. Pete

Smades87, one of the reasons that pix are important and posters keep asking for them is that Peiper made a full range of qualities of shotguns--all over the place-- from "farmer guns" to fine, if not "Best," ones. So identifying what you have matters in terms of value and whether it is worth investing in repairs, etc.
There also may be some safety issues involved....you don't want to try to shoot 20 guage shells in a 24 guage or long 12 guage shells in a short chambered 12, for example.
I have one Peiper, a nice interesting one, and owned another, a farmer gun that was a wreck not worth fixin' nor safe to shoot.
Besides, we're a very nosy bunch when it comes to doubles....

How 'bout that. Z-M proof in final state. Maybe a 1908 date-stamp, which is most difficult to see.
