I have been interested in a FAMARS hammer gun (Castore) model and found a glowing reference on a website that proclaimed the company to be "the top Italian best gun manufacturer".
Michael McIntosh (Best Guns, p224), while praising the FAMARs design (especially the bulino engraving)raised a question on the gun's reliability ("breakdown far more frequently than they should").
Can anyone comment or support either position?

I can't comment on the quality, but I was very interested in the Castore until I saw some photos. Somehow the treatment of the fences around the firing pins looked wrong to me and spoiled the gun (purely a personal view).
I have only very occasionally seen them for sale used here in the UK.
A scan through various forums does suggest that Famars had some issues in some other models.

their finish and engraving is often exquisite, however they have let some guns out with issues that shouldn't be there on guns priced in that range. A friend has 2 of their O/U's that I have shot.

I have only handled the guns so take my opinion for what it's worth but it seems as if they focused most if their time on the finish and outward appearance. Not the mechanics.

Treblig started this thread a couple of years ago:
http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbt...true#Post197413

It links to a thread over on Shotgunworld in which a guy states he had a terrible experience with Famars on an expensive gun he purchased from them:
http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224001

I hope ed doesn't start emailing you legal advice Treb. If so my apologies.

Great guns if you do not shoot them much

Well, I shoot mime a lot and without any problems or issues whatsoever.

Similar to an exotic automobile costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, what we need to remember about a "best" gun is that even though they range from the mid 50's to over $100K in price, these guns are not as robust, nor can they handle the insanely heavy loads as an over weight, American gun built with wide tolerances.

Many years ago on one of my trips to Italy I asked some folks in the trade what they thought.
Their answer was nice on the outside, not so great inside.

Best
