I ask about the fit of splinter fore ends on moderate price double guns. Is the wood supposed to bear against the barrels just about full length in the barrel channels? Or was it common practice for factories to rely on the fore end iron to support the wood, and just get a small part of the wood bearing against the barrels? I ask this because I've seen many old double guns with white rub marks on the underside of the barrel bluing, where the fore end wood is only contacting here and there. Thanks for replies.

Fit is hard to put into words, but fit is fit

I have seen fore end wood that ran hard against the barrels at the back end, meaning one had to push hard on the fore end tip to get things closed up. That strained the wood, as well as whatever fixed the wood to the iron. In operation, it probably wasn't doing the knuckle and pin any good, either.

If the wood bears hard on the barrels at the tip, the same thing will happen, but there is not as much leverage involved in getting things to go together. Anyone out there had a loop pop off?

I just acquired a gun that has the rub marks you describe, but the forearm fits beautifully. I have to think it was originally fit very close and, knowing that some movement will always occur, so too will some rub. No harm, no foul.

As to a strictly metal to metal fit, you see that a lot in trap and skeet guns and heaven knows how much use they get without failure.

Yes and Yes. My gunsmith just repaired the barrel lug on a side lever side lock ejector Grant. Sleeved by Westley Richards and BH proofed. One side showed very good attachment, the other not so good. Did not come off but was very loose. Last week on the second to last station, forend came loose on a Woodward snap action hammer gun. Lug came off and held by the forend key. Called my gunsmith and asked him if he kept the nails and wire because he will have another repair to do. Also sleeved and BH proofed. One side showed very good joint, the other not so good. I'll have him do a new stock finish while it's on the bench. Has stunning wood darkened by age and oil so I wanted to do that job anyway. Both of these are great shooters and I'm glad I am able to take care of them for awhile.

for proper function, forend should
not fall off when gun is fired...everything else is cosmetic.
