Thought you folks might enjoy Nathan Heineke's interpretation of the Whelen-Wundhammer rifle.
Nathan had this to write about the rifle.
"You may be interested in these few notes regarding the rifle:
-With the exception of the blank of from-France French walnut (estate sale in California), all the parts were either leftover, re-built and reconditioned, or fabricated in the shop. The receiver and bolt were reconditioned then re-heat treated. I fabricated the front sight ramp, the Lyman 48 base, barrel-band, and swivel studs.
-All of the wood and metal finishing done here in the shop.
-Lyman 48 staff is matte nickel plated.
-The stock is the same dimensionally as Whelen's except a shorter LOP. The cross-sections, however, are of different contours even though the widths are the same. Fills the hands better. The grip has a modest diamond cross-section hidden by the checkering.
-Bolt lift is a measured 5.5 lbs. and WITHOUT lightening the mainspring!
-Caliber is 6.5x55, barrel length 26", weight 7 lb. 14 oz., balance: unbelievable!
I did not want to do a laborious and dogmatic reproduction of the original sporter. Rather, a rifle done in the spirit and nostalgia of the original, with respects to both Wundhammer and Whelen, but also with influences of my own."
