I am offered a 12 gauge Hunters Special in 75-80% condition for $700.My question is this, that price is top money for an ordinary Hunters Special gun, this gun has the bombs and other military marks under the barrels,1941 gun.It also has a second set of barrels marked the same that fit but are not serial numbered to the gun.Do those arsenal marks bring a premium to the gun?I have found the history of the military purchased L C Smith and Hunter guns and less than 200 Hunter Specials were supposibly purchased and marked.I can find nothing as to what they would sell for.Any oppinions ae appreciated......

In 1943 there were 186 Hunter Specials delivered to Rochester, N.Y.

I seriously doubt that the extra set of barrels were from this gun originally as there would be no need for Rochester to have a second set of barrels for them.
In order to find out if this gun is a true Ordinance gun because the stamp is available, it might pay to get a Records letter for it.

As for more money, I would say so, and even though the barrels were not made for this gun, an extra set is always nice but most times it doesn't bring that much more money.
In 80% condition it is worth $800 and the Hunter Special is the only Fulton box locks with the rotary bolt, just like the side lock ones.

The extra set of barrels are not from the gun for sure,he purchased them at a gun show years ago just because they were ordinance marked and fit the gun also. The original barrels numbered to the gun also has the flaming bombs on them.I am just trying to find out if the markings make the value of the gun at a premium over what the gun itself is worth....Thankyou

I do not believe that the Ordnance Mark increases the value except for a mint condition to a limited niche of collectors.

I disagree that the extra barrels do not add value. They will add value if they properly fit and give the gun more versatility (say 30 inch barrels and a second set of 28 or 26 inch barrels and they have different chokings) How much value do they add, a couple of hundred.

sounds like a cool gun, with two sets of barrels and u.s ordnance marks to boot...now if you could just find a pitcher of bomber gunner clark gable posing with it, that would be something!

Might not be useful info but,

I recently paid 700 for a 28 inch barrel 20 Ga Hunters Special. Objective was to have something for sub guage events. It's a nice gun, handles well and works just fine. It's out now to have the stock De-oiled cleaned and bedded, it's going to be shot a lot. Probably putting 300 more into the gun and will end up with more invested than it is likely to re-sell for.

12 with extra barrels 700 is not unreasonable if you want a nice shooting vintage 12, what other American Double from the period are you going to find at that price ? Good LC Smith Fields without the extra barrels sell for couple hundred more. Flaming Bomb is a nice extra that may make it re-sell faster at some point. Not something I would seek or pay more for.

Always think about why I want something, useful first. Collectable and value distant 2nd & 3rd. Others may see it different.

Supply Vs Demand is always the driving point as to what anything is worth. It would seem to me the flaming bomb would add value primarily to a collector of military arms, etc. I have no idea how many of these there are who might be interested in a gun of this type with military connections.

well I bought it,the extra set of barrels is about 8,000 numbers apart. The case again beautiful, checkering a little worn but not to bad.Blueing on the guns barrels shows a little wear but probibly 75%.The extra set of barrels are probibly 90%.The extra barrels fit as though they were made for the gun.Over all I think it was a good buy at $700.

During WW2 here in England, the RAF bought a large number of shotguns to teach aircraft gunners deflection shooting. I'm sure that the USAAF did likewise at their aerial gunnery schools, hence the military markings on the shotgun referred to.
