Would like to make a trap grip cap for an Alex Henry project.
An initial attempt at making one revealed that the geometry of the hinge pin, pivot arm and the lid edge bevel are critical. The thing ended up in the trash can.
Does any one have detailed pictures of a vintage Britt cap? Thanks Jim

I once was going to make one out of an old Springfield or Enfield buttplate. Can't remember why I didn't. Maybe the same geometry problem.

Jerry Fisher makes & sells the best IMO. Has a hinge pin in the trap tongue only, a recess for the pins ends in the body and a coil spring so the lid is removable when off the stock. He only makes a few at at time and doesn't push them. There used to be some percussion butt traps on the same hinge principal. I get that you want to make your own and might be able to post a pic in a few days. Reread your post, his is not vintage style but a much improved type that looks vintage from the outside.
I'm hunting on the Musselshell with Jerry, turned cold last night & supposed to begin snowing any minute. Lots of deer yesterday, mulie bucks sniffing does, one true trophy whitetail leaving the country..Maybe post some pics of the hunt and cap in a few days...

The problem becomes with the Recknagel or NECG cap and maybe with Jerry's is that the Alex Henry cap is .125" shorter and .065" narrower than what apparently is considered 'standard' for modern sporting rifles. Using one of those, at a minimum, would require total reshaping of the cap. Also, I am limited to one coil spring....smile.....that one returns the firing pin. Good luck hunting Steve. Jim

The trap and cavity are small enough without trying to fit into that tiny space, IMHO. The single percussion cap trap? Thanks for the good wishes, I'm plenty lucky just being here right now hunting with good friends. The cold weather seemed to push the deer into the alfalfa fields, in droves this evening, but didn't see any we could, or cared to shoot.

Jim, I have a couple around the shop....one off a Henry. You are correct, the Henry shape is very different front the typical oval. Once I'm back in the shop I'll see if I can send you some pictures. Steve

Steve, Wonderful, pictures that illustrate the geometry and mechanics of the trap would be most helpful. I don't want to attempt another until I can see exactly how they made the thing....one piece of scrap is enough. Probably wasted 20 hrs on one body and two lids. Thanks, Jim
