I found a Nitro Hunter in a local pawn shop some time last year and it's still there. It's got issues in the looks department but I haven't actually handled it to check it out further. They have a 'price reduced' tag on it now for $350. If it locks up tight and everything works I might have to take it home with me next time I go there. What should I offer? Like I said, it ain't pretty.

I think the tag says Ithaca on it. Very cool link. Thanks for posting it.

They're usually pretty beat up but simple and tough. Designed with modern shells in mind. Depends on the gauge at that price.

It's a 12. I figured I might offer him $250 or just ask what it would take to get it out the door right now. I'm guessing it can be had for about $300 or so.

Sidekick, the way that gun was built its worth ten or twenty times that amount, but its price in today's market is another matter. But, I agree with that offer of $250.00 for a 12 gauge because that's what I would probably offer, maybe go up to $275.00.

I have a 16 gauge Nitro Special, built in 1936 that I paid $400.00 for and put an additional $1,000.00 into it to clean it up. At 6 lbs. 3 oz., and at a total price of $1,400.00 dollars, I still think I stole that thing.

Good luck to you whatever you decide. smile

If on face they are a decent shooter for rough use. They are worth your price. Looks can be improved if desired to some degree but they are still just a nitro special in the end.

nitro specials are one of the few good guns that have been traditionally under priced. the come in two receiver profiles, the latter being more pleasing to mine eye...and do not dry fire without snap caps as the firing pins will break without some protection.

Geeze, up here in Canuck land I sold an excellent condition nitro special 12 gauge I had. Took me just about 2 months to get $425.00 and it was in darned near new condition. But up here it's a buyer's market for vintage SxS's.
