I have an L C Specialty Grade. My question is: the top of the barrels say "Specialty", but the bottom says "Field". All serial numbers match on this gun. Can anyone explain this? I posted on the L C Smith site, but didn't get any responses. Appreciate your help. George

Perhaps if you had posted some photos of the markings on the bottom and top of those barrels the folks at lc smith.org could have provided some assistance; but, as posted, there was no way anyone could provide solid information. What is the serial number, as the orginal barrels may have been Damascus; then replaced at some point with a set of Armor steel barrels, which were less expensive than a set of standard Specialty Grade Nitro Steel barrels (and cheaper barrels out of grade was a choice many shooters opted for). The barrels may have been replaced aftermarket with a set of Field Grade barrels then engraved with the word "Specialty" atop the barrels; the bottom line is that we can speculate all day long, but short of actually seeing the gun at the very least we need some photos providing reasonable detail. George: saw your post March 1 on the LCSCA Forum and if those fellas don't have an educated guess, you're probably not going to get one I didn't want to embarass myself over there, and hate to say this, but if your gun was made after the first floor of the old Hunter Arms factory collapsed Jan 16, 1949, guns in process or on order were completed with components on hand, and you may have gotten a Field brl. Is it marked Armor, London, Crown, or Nitro Steel? Nitro was used on Specialty grades, Armor on Fields. You can find pics on p. 401 of John Houchins' new book.
