Well, I'm back home and needless to say, as luck would have it, we arrived in Frankfurt Germany to coincide with the WARMEST WEATHER IN GERMANY, IN 40 YEARS! Jim Kromka and I, [Jim being formerly of GRIFFIN AND HOWE now Outfits and Sells FINE FIREARMS under the banner, Kromka Sporting Adventures [kromkasportingadventures.com] We hunted every day and saw game, with me taking nothing as I am a strict Trophy Hunter only. The warm weather suppressed the movement of a lot of the game [Red Stag et.al.], with the temperature being in the mid to high 80's, up until 10:30 P.M. when we came off the "high stands". We visited Jena the Home of Carl Zeiss, WUNDERKIND of the optics industry and Goethe and Schiller the poets, but sad to say no Zeiss "factory seconds store" or "closeouts", as was to be expected. The Suhl WAFFENFABRIK MUSEUM is second to none, for you lovers of GERMAN SINGLE SHOTS AND TARGET RIFLES! IT HAS TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED!
HOWEVER, THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN OF THIS TRIP WAS THE FACTORY OF CUSTOM GUNMAKER DR. [That's right...the only person in the world with a P.H.D. in COLOR CASE HARDENING!]Jorg Schilling.[email to: schilling@schilling-beschichtungen.de website at schilling-beschichtungen.de .Now normally, when someone in the shooting industry has a P.H.D. in anything, I run in the opposite direction...fast!!!!!!! However Jorg is a Gunmaker and Hunter, First! He very simply was a Merkel Plant Supervising Engineer who saw a need for a 3 YEAR scientific study in the qualities of different steels and the processes on them, that constitute Color Case Hardening. He speaks about 5 different languages and if that was not enough, when you buy an upgraded ITALIAN OR SPANISH BEST SHOTGUN [AND SOME ENGLISH] WITH COLOR CASE HARDENING FROM THE TOP MAKERS AND I MEAN ALL OF THEM,YOU ARE GETTING THE COLOR CASE HARDENING OF JORG SCHILLING! Now if that were not enough, his Custom Hagn Single Shot Rifles AND 98 Mauser Bolt Rifles are of the class, styling, workmanship and quality, of "THE GOLDEN AGE OF CUSTOM GUNMAKING" 1900-1941. I have some pictures Jim has kindly allowed me to use from his website where this 9.3x62 Custom Stutzen Mauser [Short Rifle] is for sale along with the Elephant Skin cased .375 H.H. Custom Mauser, as well. [contact him at (862) 812-3846] NOT ME! DISCLAIMER! I AM RECEIVING NO RENUMERATION OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER FOR THIS ENTRY AND THE HUNT WAS A PAID HUNT AND IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ANY PRODUCTS OR SERVICES FINE...IF NOT...ALSO FINE!I JUST THOUGHT THE PHOTOS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND I HAD A WONDERFUL TIME! The food was great and the company and people even better. As my Father used to say..."It's the size of the Memory, not the size of the Trophy that counts!" Jerry

That Stutzen (minus the big honkin scope) is dreamy! Nice work all around. Those case colors are just spectacular, though. Bright without being garish as is often seen on colors here in the US.

Totally Agree but the Germans use the big honkin' scopes to gather light as late as 10:45 P.M. in the open, to gather light to hunt. BTW what do you think of the choice of 9.3x62 for the the "Dreamy Little Rifle"? Think you might notice when it goes off? Great Comment Jerry

Oh, I understand their use of big honkers and the way they hunt, I just prefer a slim little gem of a rifle to have a small, lightweight scope. Ease of portability and I just like the lines. I thought the 9.3x62 was the cased rifle but on going to Jim's site, I see the muzzle of what I assume is the stutzen and... it ain't no varmint caliber. Still a neat rifle and a very useful cartridge. I need to kill something with mine.

Form follows function. Such scopes are great in actual use, and 9.3x62 is a wonderful world class cartridge, which leaves less bloodshot meat than common loads in a 243.
