I have a 1920 A.H. Fox AE 12 gauge. This weekend the front trigger began to act up. Took it apart with a friend and we found the little pin that guides the safety on the underside of the top strap was loose and rattling around the action. This pin is not screwed in, just pressure fit. What is the best way to put this back in and make sure it does not come out again?

Sounds like you need a new longer cross pin. Not only is it held in by friction, but it should be just barely be more narrow that the top strap so that the stock inletting keeps it in place should the friction not hold it.

SKB, what about lightly peening the old pin with a small punch to expand it?

Jeff I have a safety rod from a 12 Gauge A.H. Fox Phila Sterlingworth- unaltered- might work for your gun- I can measure it for OAL if you'd like. RWTF e-mail at dsmorin.com

Are you talking about the pin the pushes the safety back on when you open the top-lever?

I read that as the cross pin holding the safety button in. Upon re-reading he may very well have meant the pin with the rounded head that is pressed into the action guiding the safety rod. Either way, sounds like a new pin of larger diameter is in order, unless you can get a close enough fit that locktight will hold it it place.

Answer given has nothing to do with the problem that was described. You may want to read the post again. The way the problem was described, it wasn't clear if you meant the guide pin or the cross pin that retains the safety slide button. If there is something that all of us are missing, perhaps a clearer explanation of the problem would lead to a solution. Maybe you could do a little internet search for an exploded parts diagram and give us the exact name of the pin that fell out.

SKB is correct. It is the round headed pin (yoke screw?) that guides the safety spring. This is a new stock and the area under the top tang is deeper than the original - the sides are glass bedded. I will compare to the original stock and probably put some material down in this area to keep the pin from coming out and may also peen the area around it. Thanks for all the help! The new stock is a very nice piece of black walnut - sorry, I have not figured out how to post pics yet. If it is fixed by this weekend it will be at Woods and Meadows for the sxs shoot.
