Well, this one is now in my safe.
I was back at GM a few days ago and the gun manager recognized me and asked if I was still interested in the Parker. I told him no but asked to take another look at it. My first look had been a short one while holding a wiggling 15 month old, so it turns out I was wrong on a few counts.
I said it had been re-colored but I am now sure it hasn't - it just has lots of color left. The forend wood is original finish, but the butt stock has been refinished. The woodwork is not bad at all but it looks like they just didn't apply enough of whatever they were using as a finish. I think it could be remedied easily by someone who knows what he is doing (not me).
The barrels are very nice - I can't tell if they've been refinished or not - I could believe either way. The vent rib is flawless, no bumps or sags.
All serial numbers match, including the Parker single trigger. Ejectors work strong and evenly. Screws appear untouched except possible one has had a driver in it, maybe.
I hate to say it, because I prefer Meriden Parkers, but the gun locks up crisper and easier than any Meriden gun I've held. It has a wonderful 'snick' when you close it. I just don't think the gun has been fired much.
I told the guy "Nice gun but over priced, still." I went to my car and dug up a Julia catalog that happened to be there and showed him some other examples of similar guns to back it up. I told him truthfully I didn't want the gun. He asked what I would give, I told him, and he said 'no way can I go that low.' I thanked him and left - though he asked for my number.
Today he called and asked if my offer was still good. I told him yes, so he said come get it.
When I got there, he pulled out the paperwork showing what GM had paid for the gun. According to him, someone had walked into a store up North with 6 guns and the buyer there had overpaid for all of them. The price they paid for the Parker was $9500. After it sat unsold for 2 months there it was transferred to Texas since 'more guys down South like doubles'.
After my first visit they did some research and concluded it was time to take a loss, so he called me.
Tomorrow, the skeet range!
