Bought a Purdey built in 1906. Second pair of bbls also 1906 but with a slightly higher number.
First bbl set has a slight ding about six inches from the muzzle.Choked .003 and .005. Not noticeable from the outsde except as a slight blur in the bluing. Cannot feel the ding. It is visible inside with good light.
Can I shoot it before sending it off to be fixed? Other bbl set is mod and improved mod and may never be used by me. danc

Such a wonderful gun ! If it were me, I would make the barrels perfect before shooting. At this time the repair is so easy, and you are the caretaker .

Who you send a Purdey to is critical.
Only two worth considering.
JJ Perodeau at Champlin or Kirk Merrington. That's it.

If it were mine, I would get it repaired. A bazillion gunsmiths could fix it. Hopefully it won't require a reblack but it might?

Load up some 7/8 or 3/4 oz shells and shoot the second set of barrels. Pretend you are shooting a .410 or a 28 bore. Will tell you real quick how accurately you are shooting; great practice. The fix on the first set should be both easy and cheap.
If you go to The Vintage Cup or either of the Southern SXS's, there is a dude who does dents while you wait.

Cool man.
Take your $60,000 Purdey barrels to the "drive-thru dent dude."
He'll fix ya right up.

If your gun were an old field grade I would not worry it much, but given it is a more expensive proposition and the barrels were thinner to start with than a heavyweight field grade I would send it to a good gunsmith and have the issue fixed before it creates an even thnner spot.
I agree with Bilious Bob that who you send it to is vital.
The investment in a Purdey demands no chances to taken with a gunsmith who is not the best grade proven man.
Both JJ at Champlain's and Kirk Merrington are such men and I have had work done by both. They are excellent and will properly care for your gun. You could add Keith Kearcher to his list.

Dustin Mount is Purdey's approved gunsmith in the US, in the Houston area. Great work.
