In my search for info on my German Double I have had 2 people ask for pictures of the buttplate. For some reason I never asked what they were looking for and I don't remember who asked. Anyway, would someone here please educate me on this topic. Thanks

I guess I did my usual poor job of asking the question. Over the years, in trying to identify the maker and/or engraver a couple of people have asked for the buttplate pictures. I would like understand what they might be looking for. Since I've lost contact with them I can not ask them, so I was hoping someone in here would enlighten me. Anyway here is a picture.

Unless the same people who originally wanted pics of the buttplate see this, we are going to need the story over again, ie: more info on the gun and possibly other pics of the gun. Without knowing more of the original info/description of the gun, it's pretty hard to say much just by looking at the buttplate, other than it appears to be made of horn.

I've already received great help from many folks here on the question of ID'ing the gun. That's not what I'm asking now. What I'm trying to learn is what might be on the buttplate that would help with that. What would you look for on a buttplate? Here's the link to a full album of pictures, but many here have already seen them: http://s209.photobucket.com/user/bedunbar/library/German%20ShotgunThanks

Bill, I am not the one that asked for the photo, but I opine that he wanted to see the buttplate, in case it had a manufacturers logo. A logo would help ID the gun. Mike

Mike, Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Was the a common practice? Is the some reference material I can read that identifies these logo's on older guns?
