Gentlemens:

Attached is a picture of yet another Steve Earle Wesson #1 Long Range action.

This is genuine Ken Hurst engraving, a very intricate and confusing intertwining scroll. One of the tricks to figuring out Mr. Hurst's scroll is to try to find the origin. I noticed on this one that the origin of the hammer scroll is somewhere on the lock plate. Like all fine engraving, you really need to hold it in your hands to truly appreciate it.

The rifle belongs to Mr. Doug Mann, who apparently has come up with a stock for it somewhere. The action will be French Grayed, which should show off the scratching to good effect.

Eightbore, a friend of mine, and myself went to visit Mr. Ken and Miss Julie about 3 weeks or so ago for final discussions of the artwork to use in engraving an SX-1 of mine. The day was fascinating, Ken is a pleasure to both work with and as a new friend, and Julie is a delight.

One of the many things that we discussed was my desire for scroll work that was highly interleaved and complex and avoided concentric circles of tendrils. I'm glad to see more examples of Ken's scroll and I am reassured (although I really had no doubts) about his style of scroll.

Someone on this site mentioned that Ken doesn't know beans about BBQ...I don't know about that, although I believe I will find out sometime this summer, but as Eightbore mentioned, we all now know quite a bit about eating really terrific fried chicken and black eye peas.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Cheers

Stephen

As Ken knows, I'm extremely pleased with the engraving that he has done on my Wesson. I asked Ken for his intertwinning scroll and he did a wonderful job.

Glenn and I saw a really nice example of french gray on a rifle at the Guild show this year that Steven Dodd Hughes was displaying. He was kind enough to share the receipe so that's what we're going to do.

I liked the border that Ken did and asked him what it was called. I think he said "nick and slash by old Hack'n Slash" was the style.

Now I have to come up with an appropriate checkering pattern to match the rest of the rifle.

Heck if I don't shoot it well at least I'll look good doing it.

I'll say you'll look good shooting it Doug! But with a rifle that's going to look as good as the Wesson will, the expectations for good shooting will be high!

a picture in its wood maybe? I understand that there is a gentleman or two out there with a pattern for making stocks. Was it Mr. Crosnoe? Thanks,
Steve

The rifle is chambered in 45/70 and its main purpose will be to shoot steel animals. Mr. Fewless is bluing the barrel and doing a bang up job I mught add. I did volunteer to do the bluing but Glenn wanted to do it so he could continue to view the "wedding ring" transition on the barrel.

Steve, Crosnoe profiled the wood for this gun. I used the long range version for my gun because I like the looks of it better but that is a matter of personal choice.
