A friend has acquired a 19th century 12 ga hammer gun with deep engraving, gold inlays and 36" barrels. Pretty beat but of fairly high quality. What appears to be the maker's name in gold on the rib is Tomas Carr. Has anyone heard of him?

There were about 14 British and another 12 American gunmakers with the name Carr. No Tomas or Thomas Carr that I can find.

May not be a 'Maker’ at all. Any proof marks on the gun. How about inside the locks any initials?

Thomas would normally be abbreviated to Thos. The spelling as Tomas may be more reflective of a central/Eastern European spelling rather than English. Poss Czech, Polish , Austrian

Pictures would really help. Be sure to include any markings / proof marks.

I agree Mr. Hugh we may be looking in the wrong part of the world. That “deep” relief engraving is also an indication that we may be able to eliminate an English maker. We sure could use them pictures.

Apparently I didn't add photos. Tried to send them from Photobucket. This method of attaching photos seems incredibly complicated compared to other forums I've posted to. Any help would be appreciated.
