Start with a ctg that fits the spool.Dia. is more of a problem than length.300. savage and its derivatives is a good choice. you wont have to mess with the spool if you stay below 7mm. Depends on rifle's use. They were chambered in some pretty healthy calibers.

tomc,
If the rifle feeds, it is likely the magazine spool("fingers") were reworked by ("Classic").The 6,5x54 is smaller at the head than 6mm Int.Once reworked for 6mm, it may be ok for 7mm IHSMA, or at least require very little work.

The spool is like it left the factory. This rifle fed the 6mm int. before it went to Pederson. The Int is larger dia than the 6.5 but there is enough clearance for it in the spool. Do you have one of these rifles that I could compare mine to. If I were to build another it would probably be a 35 Rem with an 18" barrel. Would have to modidify the spindle because of bullet dia. I changed from 6mm to the 7mm because the actions slow lock time wasn't up to the ctgs potential. It is pretty and smooth but not as eficient and strong as my Arisaka.

tomc,
I have one of the Austrian military versions and one of the Italian version actions set aside to build a 6.5x54 MS on.I am so far from you that it would be easier to find someone closer to you than come here. You are lucky the 6mm fit, reworking the spool is not easy. There is not much difference between the head diameter of the 35Rem and 6.5x54MS, so you should only have to worry about the forward part of the spool.
