Pr - if you are considering getting on a USA bound airplane with a gun in tow you need to do a few things. You need good proof that it is an antique if you think so. You don't need to declare it in Customs, but you do need to be ready to defend it if you draw an inspection. If it is not an antique, you WILL need an ATF6. To have the ATF6, the gun must have been decided on about 2 to 3 months before you leave so you have time to get the approved form back from ATF. Since the Form is specific to S/N and description of a particular gun, the purchase decision must be made ahead of time. Should you avail yourself of SB's offer to "shoot it there," should decide against the purchase, simply cancel the ATF6 on your return. If you go the ATF6 route, you will also need a letter from a FFL appointing you to act as his agent. Go through the "Goods to Declare" part of Customs, stop by your FFL and have him write the gun in his books, return the ATF6 and enjoy.
While a bit unnerving for most people, this is doable. If you enjoy "the hunt," this is not a bad way to go and can be quite an experience in its own right.
BTW, living in Woodward, OK, makes you a candidate to shoot/collect James Woodward's products - obviously.
