I have found at a small auction that has several nice examples of drilling and this one odd duck in the mix. Any idea on what time frame this would have been made? It has a cheek piece, claw mounts, trap in stock and is in nice condition. Emil Kerner in Suhl side by side shotgun and 9.3mm X 72R rifle, marked Krupp – Stahl, and nitro proofed.

Post 1912 & pre-1923 if not dated. Really depends on if the term NITRO is block or script.

mwhite49, Emil Kerner was well known for many years,so, absent additional information,it will be difficult to tie down a time frame. If you tried to post photos or a link,it didn't work.If you can provide photos, especially of the proof marks, likely a better answer can be provided. The "address line" can also provide a hint as to the time frame. The Kerners(father, son, grandson)were known as fine makers. Mike

Here is a group shot of these at the auction, no close up. The one in question is the 3rd one down. The drilling right above is a really nice gun.

W. Voss may have been a stage name for H.Burgsmüller: W. Voss and Haselhorst & Co http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=274106Look at the very back of the frame, which should have a small extension and if that extension has a small screw, the sporting weapon would be of the Kerner-Anson design. If so, it would be a quality piece and fits the time period. Kind Regards, Raimey rse

Any idea on what one of these would be worth as far as retail went? I have seen a drilling almost identical as this one go for over 5,000.00 and I was really suprised. Since this is just a small town auction they may go cheap. Mike

Mike,
Attempting to place a value on a drilling from the picture above is nearly impossible. When I look at a drilling or shotgun for possible purchase and evaluation there are about a hundred things I look at starting with the proof marks. I check the chambers and chokes with a gauge then inspect the stock and forend for any sign of small cracks. The condition of the bores is of high importance as well as the mechanicals. There are just too many potential issues. In the picture I can't even see the engraving (if there is any). A drilling like that can be worth as little as $700. or as much as $4,000. There is just too little information.
Regards, Roger

Mike, Ditto to what Roger said, plus, be sure the ribs are not loose and there is no crack at the water table/standing breech junction. Mike

mwhite49,
The third one down looks more like a buchsflinte (rifle and shotgun SXS) or double rifle to me, is it?
