I have a couple of medium grade guns; an L C Smith 3E and a Fox A grade. Both guns are tight on face with good barrels etc.. Both guns have been handled a lot during their 100 year lives and I expect experienced some sanding although both still have wood slightly proud or flush with the metal. As a result the checkering is just about gone on both of them. The wood grain and tone is pleasing to my eye. I have contemplated having them recheckered. . So if they were yours would you have the wood recheckered or just let them remain with their now near smooth wood? I don't contemplate selling them.

I would buy one of Brownells bent needle files and recut it myself.

I agree with Bill. Brownells sells a checkering riffler that does a good job if you take your time and use one of those magnifiers that strap around your head. Also take your time.
One last thing, Take your time.

Why not a handle and cutter from Dembart? Any advantage to a riffler?

IMO, the #1 issue with cutting checkering is to keep your light arranged so as to sidelight the checkering lines you are working on. If you don't know how and/or some of the pattern is lost, consider sending it out. Or, build up skill on a cheaper gun first.

Don't do it. Your guns will never look right again.
They're old guns and they've been used. They should look that way.
