Whatever happens to all of the beautiful, hand engraved G&H butt plates after they get replaced with a pad? Anyone have one for sale?? I have been searching for a very long time. There must be a parts bin out there somewhere with one or more of them in it.
Thanks for any leads or offers for sale.

I'm sure they are bought as soon as they see the light of day. Collecting pre-war sporters also means that I try to buy any parts or pieces that I might need in the future. IMO the hardest thing to find is a G&H front sight followed by the trapdoor buttplates they used. Everyone used the same buttplates, they were made in Germany, but I almost never see them for sale and if I do I would buy it.

Both the door and the plate have an assembly number "10" and below the bottom screw hole is stamped in small letters "Germany". I have seen several very early G&H plates and "Germany" is stamped on the inside with a ink stamp.

Michael, correct me if I am wrong, but the spring is not "on the crosspin". The spring is separate and the door rotates on the crosspin and the spring just holds the door closed and open. It is not as complicated as it looks, and one of our members even contemplated making trap buttplates from Winchester steel plates. I wonder if any were actually made?

Yes, that is how it works, the door rotates on the pin, remove the spring and the door would fall off. If anyone is thinking of making these I would loan mine to get measurements from.
