I have a back-lock Lefaucheux actioned SxS 16gau. A description follows, I could take some pics. & Email for someone to post. -Anyway Bietz on the left lock, A. Strasburg on the right. -Underside of barrels Bernard, Brevet, Bayet Fres., a mark I can't make out but not the Belgian ELG. and 17.0 on one barrel. -The barrels are I believe "chain" damascus and in gold the name F./ CF.(not sure) Bernard (stylized) on the top rib. -There are remnants of nickel? plating on the action which had gold plated triggers at one time, there is no engraving. -Also the initials FR on the locks (inside) and GD inside on the lever(inside). Any info. / comments would be appreciated, I would describe the whole gun as dainty. --- John Can.

John,
Send me the pictures. The FR could be Riga or Renkin.

Hi guys, This is an E. Bernard gun, not a Leopold Bernard. E probably stands for Ernest. He was in Liege. He had 2 patents which concurs to the "Brevete" (i.e. patent holder) mark on the barrel. The gun was retailed before 1870-71, after which Strasbourg became German. Accordingly to the general time frame, the locks are non rebounding. It's quite nice actually. Centerfire guns were not that common at that time. There is some writing on the bottom rib. Can't make it out xbayexxx???. Best regards, WC-

Pete - Thank you for posting the pics. WC - thank you for your comments, that old eh! That is Bayet Fres. on the bottom. I think under the circumstances I'll just put it back together as is (won't attempt any refinishing etc.) it is what it is. Good idea? --- John

John, It is most definitely an early gun from all the evidence. I own a couple about this old. My preference is to admire them. It is nice example of Bernard damascus with a Lefaucheux action to boot. Well worth what you paid for it. Leave the shooting to a younger gun, say 1880 or so Here is my Schrade which dates to about the same time... Pete
