as advised I did a cham. cast on nimrod,gewehrfabik,suhl 7.8/57. Not proficient in such matters I think I gathered enough info. to better understand what I have. case length 2.255' ',neck .362" grim chamber ahead of shell mouth .325. Bore cast/ grooves 324", lands 312".as my 75yr. old hands please view these numbers accordingly. Pill

With the dimensions you have provided,your drilling seems to be either one or the other of two different cartridges.The marks 7.8/57 could be either 8x57IR or 8x57R/360. Go back to the chamber cast and measure the diameter just ahead of the rim. If this diameter is near .468-473", then it is 8x57IR. If it is near .427-433",then it is 8x57R/360.If the dimensions for barrel groove/land diameter are correct(depends on material for chamber cast and time after casting the measurements were made)then standard 8mm .323"bullets are useable,in fact, if 8x57IR then 8x57IRS is likely to be useable.More often than you would think,8x57IRS is useable in 8x57IR chambers.There are differing opinions of the reason for this. A 8x57IRS chambered rifle would have been marked 7.9 or 7.92/57- This is just one of those differing opinions.

My chamber cast.is Cerrosafe, My casting is to poor to get a good read, however if I measure down the cast form base to shoulder I can not get small enough to record.427. This would lead me to believe that the case is .468/473? I believe the orig. cart.are rimed as the extractor is just like the extractors for the shot barrels is this a safe deduction? I found a proof mark of N 15gr. Does this help? Thank you for putting up with me! Peter

Yes, in this case a 15 gram bullet weight on a 8X57 equates to IR.

Raimey is correct, that the chamber is for 8x57IR. BTW, the "R" in "IR",stands for rimmed.If your measurements from the barrel are correct,you still may be able to use 8x57IRS ammo and or .323" bullets for handloading.

I must be missing something. Why not use 8x57IR (often listed as 8x57JR) ammunition or reload to 8x57JR specifications with a .319 bullet?
But perhaps I have missed something.

He can use 8x57IR ammo or .318 bullets to hand load,this will cause no problem.The suggestion to try 8x57IRS was because he reported the barrels groove diameter as .324",which is .006" larger than .318"bullets.Bullets in the current standard dia(.323")are much more avaliable and seem to fit the barrel better,therefore more likely to be accurate.
