Can anyone tell me what the original finish was on this shotgun I inherited from my great grandfather? I want to have it restored. Plus; does anyone have any experience with Craftguard Metal Finishing Services of Waterloo, Iowa? They refinish Damascus barrels. Thanks.

Can't help you with the original finish on that gun, but I used to live in Waterloo. I was not aware that Craftguard did Damascus refinishing. I know they did a lot of hot bluing, and people would often take guns to them for quick and reasonably priced work on gun barrels appropriate for the hot bluing process.

A Lindner Daly is a fine gun. If I were having it done, I'd go with someone who's an expert at Damascus barrel work. You might check out Mark Beasland at Mark's Born Again Birdguns here in Wisconsin: www.mbabllc.com. Mark teaches Damascus restoration in the doublegun classes at Trinidad College in Colorado.

Be careful. "Restoring" a gun is a great way to wreck it, and the vast majority of gunsmiths out there will wreck a gun like that.

I would try cleaning it up first. Get all the dirt, grime, & rust off of it. Then decide what to do from there.

BTW: if you're taking that gun to someone who doesn't know what the original finish was, you're taking it to the wrong place.

This gun need gentle cleaning and rust removal, not restoration. A restored Charles Daly hammer gun is worthless to collectors. Your GG picked a heck of a gun to leave outside. Good luck with the project. Is the top lever spring broken or is it just rusted stiff.

Best thing you could do is sell it for a few hundred bucks to someone who cares about it.....it's clearly evident from seeing it's current state that your Grandfather didn't give a dam about it.

George, I'm sure you're right and I'm sorry for my negativity, it's just sad that someone would let it go like that.

The gun looks very sound and you could start with some Hoppes #9 and some 4-0 steel wool on the metal. Some murpeys oil on the stock and rub gently. It will look 100% better. Then have a good double gun gunsmith evaluate it. If it's all there and sound by all means shoot it.
