Got into a discussion with someone who believes there is a legal agreement for all shotgun shells to be color coded by guage. Is anyone familiar with this topic and where can I find references please?

Can't be so, since the only gauge that's standard is 20. A SAAMI publication might have the references on this, and I'm guessing it's a gentlemen's agreement.

A legal agreement between or among whom? Google can find anything if the right question is asked, but there are shells out there of all the colors of the rainbow. Not having ever owned a 20 ga., I'm wondering now, are all 20 ga. shells yellow? Stop by Ben Avery if you're out and about this week. The NMLRA Western Nationals run from Wednesday through Monday.

I have current production 16-gauge shells that are purple, black, red, and blue. I have 20-gauge shells in lots of colors, but I can't say they are current production.

And SAAMI is a trade association. They have no authority to enforce anything.

WHAT!!!! This would take all the fun out of reloading. Also the poor guys working the machines to manufacture factory ammo might get bored:->

Few years back I ordered a flat of 16 ga field loads from B&P. The shells were friggin yellow. My first thought was they shipped me a flat of 20's - nope. I had a flat of yellow 16's. Talk about psychological problems - REALLY made me pay attention to loading the car for trips to the grouse woods. I would find myself stopping half way up north just to confirm that I had packed the shells I wanted to pack. I even called B&B - "sorry, I know what you mean but that's the way they came in."
For the record, my favorite cartridge will always be the red paper 20 ga shells from Winchester. They just remind me of my dad.
