Hi all,
I realize that this is not the 'specialist' forum for my question, but I trust the knowledge base here.

You may remember my thread on the german 'Reduzierhülse'
by this chap 'Samereier' in Bavaria who machines cartridge cases with a reduced interiour volume for cheap, low pressure loads in the original caliber.

In my case (for the 'Otto Bock' Suhl 1939 combination gun) -
a .222Rem case with the volume of a .22 Hornet for the .222Rem barrel insert (Einstecklauf) in the 16g top barrel.

I have tried the loads I could find on the net and 3 - 5 grs of Unique are OK - but I dislike the dirt in the gun from the (old batch) of Unique!

My question:
I have a load of Vitavuohri N140 (about 1.5 Kg) powder left (from .308 days)
and would like to know whether I can get a load for this cartridge (basically a .22 Hornet in a .222 case) to give me anything between 1500 and 2500 FPS with VV N140? (Speer 50gr SP - 1029)

I've got Speer 50gr SP bullets and am thinking of Sierra Varminter Blitz 50 or 45gr to buy for the full loads (N120)

I am getting old (which is the reason I don't seem to be able to put this question in a shorter form) and do not really want to invest in Quickload or similar for this, surely the only reloading question for the rest of my life that cannot be answered by Google.

Anyone who might have some loads or has access to Quickload for this specific one?
Would be very much obliged

Trajectories I should be able to work out myself, I suppose, once I've got the Velocity(ies)

case volume: 22 Hornet (actually minus 10% - but that I can live with)
bullet: either the Speer 50gr 1029 which I have, or the Sierra Varminter Blitz 45gr and 50 gr which I am about to buy for the standard reloads.

Thanks and regards from England

Gunter,

If your availability in England permits, some of the preferred powders for the .22 Hornet are IMR as listed......I prefer IMR 4227 for the small rifle cartridges, 32-20 WCF etc., clean burning......

Here are some real good loads and bullet weights for your review....

Add rifle and .22 Hornet in the drop down windows and click.....

Best,

Hi Doug,
thanks for answer.
I have got all the standard loading data books from different powder manufacturers.

I am just trying to find out whether I can use up a load of VitaVuohri N140 powder which I still have.

N 140 is a slower powder (equivalent approx. H380) than what is normally used in a Hornet load.

I can get 8grs of N140 in the case without compressing it
and wondered what velocity that would give.

Regards from England

Gunter,
If you want to use n140, you may have better luck in 222 cases. Many use H110 or 296 in the Hornet, lately Lil Gun has been giving very good results. All in all, though, since the idea is to use up the n140,I think developing a reduced load in 222 cases makes a lot of sense.

Not that familiar with N140 but as I recall this is a rather slow powder. Be very cautious with reduced loads of slow powders in a rifle case which do not fill or near fill the case. Although Secondary Explosion Effect (SEE) most often occurs in high volume cases I would not rule it entirely out. Using a slow enough powder one could pour full & pack in & shoot these loads for a century with no ill effect have been known to take a rifle apart with reduced loads.

don't worry, I will not 'underload' a cartridge - I am aware of the dangers of a 'detonation'

I have these 'reduced volume' cartridges in .222rem
made in germany
I'll attach a photo which shows the cartridge
They are turned from solid brass rod
The volume is that of a .22 Hornet and holds
5gr of Unique or
8gr of VitaVuohri N140 under the bullet - not compressed

So I basically have a .22 Hornet cartridge with the outer dims of a .222Rem

5gr Unique/50gr blt in a .22 Hornet case are reported to give approx 2100 fps

I am trying to find out what velocity 7 or 8 gr N140 would give from a 'Hornet' case.

My can of Unique dates from 1999 - before they changed to
a 'cleaner' burning powder and makes a hell of a mess in the gun.
I will burn this off in the garden I think - it's no good for anything else.

Best regards from England
