South Dakota Increases Nonresident Hunting Fees http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/11/01/south-dakota-increases-nonresident-hunting-fees/I'm not sure that's the best way to go about raising revenue. Seems it would hurt tourism. If I read the article correctly it's a $35.00 increase to out of state hunters hunting on properties that have a Preserve license.

I doubt it will hurt them at all. When one considers the cost of getting there, staying there, and hunting etc. the license fee is the least of my concerns.
It may effect a few neighbor state hunters from buying a license, but the majority of out state hunters will come regardless.

Also a $10 increase, from $110 to $120, for the general 10 day nonresident small game license. Given that Iowa's nonresident small game license is $125, and given that South Dakota will likely harvest about 7 or 8 times as many pheasants as Iowa this year, maybe not an outrageous increase.

The cost bump probably won't be much of a deal breaker in the long run. The biggest rub as far as I'm concerned is that what your actually buying is 10 half day permits for the first two weeks of the season. Having to sit around until noon before you can hunt is just nut's IMO. "But I still do it"
But then again if you do the math. Even with the increase it still only comes out to $12.00 a day. Compare that with a lift ticket at say Vail or Aspen. Vail's web site lists an adult one day lift ticket @ $100.00 and they sell a bunch of them.
As far as the preserve license fee increase. If you can afford $1500.00 to $2000.00 for a three day hunt at some of the preserve lodges. Thirty five extra bucks won't break the bank.

dogon, If you keep applying math to hunting, you're gonna ruin it for me. I'll be standin in line with old AmarilloMike for chicken at KFC if you keep it up. I don't even wanna know how much that comes to per pound.

Yeah Chuck your right. I know better than to do the math.
When I think about the 2012 F-150 Platnium edtion truck, the Jones six hole dog trailer. Maintaining four dogs year around, a gathering of double shotguns, Etc, Etc, Etc, Just to go a shoot some birds.
What ever you do. "Don't Do The Math" !!!!

Math should be left to those that don't hunt. They have nothing better to do but count beens, I for one count birds, nothing more. WELCOME TO OLD SOUTH DAKOTA BOYS! Now pull the trigger.

Well dogon, it might seem nuts to you to wait until the birds come off the roost, but there is no arguing that SD's bird management is producing the most huntable pheasant population in the country, maybe in the world if considered by the square mile.
There are real reasons for it but let me share the local versions of why and maybe you will have enough of a chuckle the next time you come to hunt, you might not be driven nuts.
First version: The bar owners rcognised that if the hunters did not have to get up until mid-morning, they would spent more time in the bars, petitioned the state legislature to open the season at 11:00 AM.
Second version: The state's men of the cloth wanted to be certain that half of their flock would not miss Sunday services, petitioned the state' legislature for an 11:00 AM opening hour.
Third version: The local merchants knew that if the hunters could not start before mid-morning, that they would out of boredom, shop more and so they too petitioned the state's legislature. Cabelas' knowing this to be valid, chose to build a store in Mitchell, about the epi-center of the bird hunting.
Fourth version: The hunters' from Minnisota needed more time to reach the SD fields, so they had their SD kinfolk petition the state's legislature.
Fifth version: My neighbor's around Henry found my antics at daybreak during the fall offense and they petitioned the state's legislature to keep me from distrubing their peace and quite until 11:00AM.

I've heard all the different versions for the late start several times over. IMO, none of them make any sinse.
